VINEYARDS - Place of production: the grapes for the production of the wine Riserva Ducale predominantly come the vineyards of the Ruffino estates Santedame, Montemasso and Gretole, located in the traditional Chianti Classico production area stretching over the provinces of Siena and Florence. The soil is characteristic for the area with an abundant presence of Galestro rock. The microclimate is variable one area to another which confers richness and complexity of perfumes to the wine. Altitude: Variable 290 to 450 meters above sea level Growing system: Guyot trained and Cordon trained. Vine density: 3000/5000 vines/hectare.
VINIFICATION AND AGEING The Chianti Classico "Riserva Ducale" stems an accurate selection of the best grapes during harvest. Picking started in the 3rd week of September and lasted until mid October. The alcohol fermentation, aided by racking and punching down, took place in stainless-steel vats at a controlled temperature of 26/28°C for approzimately 10 days. The maceration on the skins continued for another 15 days. After completing the malo-lactic fermentation Riserva Ducale was aged in stainless-steel vats for a brief period and then in 40/80 hl. oak casks for approximately 24 months. The wine has undergone a minimum of 6 month's bottle refinement. Alcohol content: 13%
SENSORY PROPERTIES Colour: Ruby red with garnet hues Aroma: the bouquet is typical for Chianti Classico wines with inviting floral and fruity notes intertwining with the spicy touch deriving the long ageing period in oak barrels. Notes of plums and cherries are followed by hints of sweet tobacco and cocoa, creating an elegant and long-lasting bouquet. Tasting profile: The taste is very well-balanced and features all the virtues of oak aged Sangiovese. The tannins are sweet and velvety, the acidity is inviting and fragrant and the fruity notes lead towards a long, delicious aftertaste of berry fruits and cassis. Elegant and medium-bodied, the palate is characterised by sweet notes of mature fruit which blend beautifully with the soft tannins and the acidity. The after-taste is typical for Sangiovese with hints of hazelnuts and leather. First Vintage: 1927
