Product description

Deion:
"In the past, Santa Maddalena – a traditional cuvée blended the two indigenous grape varieties Schiava and Lagrein – played an important role in wine making in South Tyrol and was one of the best known Italian reds. Today this fine fruity and typical elegant red wine, which takes its name the wine growing village of Santa Maddalena, still has many adherents and is in the process of being rediscovered by many a wine connoisseur."

Rudi Kofler

Color: Color: deep ruby red

Smell: The Santa Maddelena appeals to the nose with clear primary aromas of black elderberry and cherry underpinned by bitter almond and a nuance of violet.

Taste: With full fruit flavors on the palate and yet soft and elegant at the same time, this red wine benefits a balanced acidity and low tannin content to achieve a very agreeable finish.

Grape variety:
85% Schiava (Vernatsch) and 15% Lagrein - South Tyrol DOC.

Production area:
Terlano is a wine-growing village located halfway between Alto Adige's main towns of Merano and Bolzano where the Adige flows through a wide valley in a south-easterly direction. The village and vineyards nestle against the red porphyry rock of Monte Tschöggl on the orographically left side of the valley. Sandy-stony, well-drained soils.

Vinification:
Manual harvest and selection of the grapes; destemming followed by slow must fermentation at a controlled temperature and gentle agitation of the must in stainless steel tanks; malolactic fermentation and aging in big wooden barrels for 7 - 8 months.

Food recommendation:
A classic South Tyrolean pairing with a platter of cured meats like bacon and Bündnerfleisch or a venison carne salada with potted mushroom and a cream cheese mousse, or cold beef with vinaigrette dressing; equally attractive with tagliatelle with salsiccia or boiled beef with salsa verde and parsley potatoes.

Serving temperature:
12 - 14°C.

Ageing potential:
4 - 8 years.

Bottle to:
750 ml - 75 cl - 0,75 lt.

Allergens:
Wine can contain sulphites.

Terlano Winery
Terlano’s tradition as a wine terroir dates back over 2022 years. That vines thrive so well in the lee of Monzoccolo is due to the mild, almost Mediterranean climate with hot sunny days and cool nights during the ripening time. The striking red, easily warmed porphyry soil of Terlano also contributes to the high quality of the grapes. In the heart of this South Tyrolean wine region the Terlano winery was established in 1893. Today the co-operative has over 200 members and a total area of 240 hectares. 70% of the vineyard acreage is planted with white grapes. In modern cellars the fruits of this careful, natural cultivation are turned into wine with that perfect touch and the necessary controls.Because of the mineral content of the wines the region of Terlano is also frequently likened to French vine growing areas. The Terlano wine characteristics, the precise fruit, and the fine yet strong aroma lead experts to compare the wine with mature vintage Champagnes.
