The 2017 Rasteau comes from vines 15-30 years of age. Its dark, rich and chocolaty, with plum and spice cake notes carried on a full-bodied, creamy-textured palate. Its long and lush on the finish, where it folds in attractive hints of licorice. It should drink well for 6-7 years.

Frdric Romero was alone in the big winery when I arrived at the end of the day. He seems a bit more confident, while still being humble about what he brings to the wines. Like in other parts of the Southern Rhne, the 2018 vintage was difficult here, with about 40 of the crop lost to mildew. The resulting wines are, said Romero, "not that concentrated but very agreeable, very fruity." Based on what he showed me from tank and foudre, it seems likely there will only be two Rasteaus bottled from the vintage, versus four from 2017.

"Flavors of preserved plums and black-cherry compote are accented by hints of cocoa powder, char and salty minerality here. Sourced from younger vines (10-30 years old) of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre and vinified entirely in stainless steel, it offers a similar intensity of fruit and savory nuances as prestige bottlings from this producer, but with a bit more ease for youthful enjoyment.
